I just want a cheap P90 option of some sort and I know I like that neck from having briefly owned a Modern Player Plus (which is sort of like a hardtail strat with it's pickup and switch configuration). Although I'm considering adding a Modern Player thinline but that's not really a tele - that's a dual P90 guitar with Gibson controls but a tele shaped body and neck. But when I've had a tele AND a strat, I never found myself reaching for the tele except out of guilt or obligation. When I've had a tele and no strat, it would usually be my favorite guitar. I personally like the hardtail nature of teles because I never use a tremolo, but it's easy enough to block a trem and now I have a Robert Cray hardtail strat anyway.
And since I'm not one to play the bridge pickup by itself on pretty much ANY guitar, the tele doesn't offer me anything useful the strat doesn't.
I personally have always found the strat to be a more versatile instrument. The strat, OTOH, has lots of sounds in positions 2, 4, and 5 (and maybe a bit on 3) that you can't get on a tele.
Other than that, I think you can get pretty much any sound you can get from a tele on a strat.
I think the one thing that's really unique to the telecaster that the strat can't do is if you like a really wide open, hot bridge pickup sound, whether for country twang or screaming lead playing or whatever. I'm biased because I'm more of a strat guy.
